Savannah -- marketed as Georgia's First City -- boasts an eclectic blend of shopping options from mall fare to low country boutique treasures. Savannah's benne wafer -- a thin, crisp treat known as the seed of good luck and doubling as a popular gift -- is in steady supply at Waters Avenue's Byrd Cookie Company & Gourmet Marketplace, founded in 1924. The Historic District's River Street, lined with cobblestone sidewalks and old cotton warehouses, beckons with candy emporiums, art galleries and shops for nautical themed apparel and gifts. In the heart of Savannah's antiques district, Broughton and Bull streets brim with treasures of old, including antiquated maps and out-of-print books. In all, more than 60 Savannah antiques shops are filled with collections of 18th and 19th century English and American furnishings, period paintings, and bric-a-brac.
At Jefferson and St. Julian streets, City Market has art studios, specialty shops, restaurants, and an outdoor courtyard with live music and horse-drawn carriages. Savannah's south side has two malls, and assorted shopping plazas. Savannah Mall, on Abercorn Street, has Dillard's, Steve & Barry's, Target, and a Burlington Coat Factory, plus more than 100 retail shops, restaurants, a food court, and a carousel. Oglethorpe Mall, also on Abercorn Street, anchored by Belk, Macy's, JCPenney, and Sears, has retailers including Stein Mart and Build-A-Bear Workshop and restaurants including Johnny Rockets.
